The Appalachian Trail: A Sunrise, a Sweet Treat, and the Kindness of Strangers
Today's adventure begins with a sunrise that beckons me to the cabin porch. As a hiker, I often find myself embracing the beauty of nature at odd hours, and this sunrise is a sight to behold. It's a rare privilege to witness both sunset and sunrise from the same vantage point, and it's moments like these that make the Appalachian Trail (AT) so captivating.
A Sweet Indulgence
Hiking is not just about the physical journey; it's also about the culinary delights along the way. In Woodstock, Vermont, I stumbled upon a local gem: the On the Edge Farmstand and Abracadabra Coffee Company. After a refreshing nectarine and Gatorade, I indulged in a vanilla latte and the famous Vermont maple creemee. This soft serve, infused with pure maple syrup, is a local delicacy and a must-try for hikers. It's these unique experiences that make hiking the AT so memorable.
The Challenges of Vermont
Vermont is not ready to bid farewell to hikers without a challenge. The trail in this state is a relentless series of ascents and descents, preparing us for the upcoming White Mountains. It's a grueling test of endurance, but I like to think of it as a training ground for the more demanding trails ahead. Every step brings us closer to the summit, both literally and metaphorically.
Trail Angels and Their Generosity
One of the most heartwarming aspects of the AT is the kindness of strangers. I had the pleasure of meeting Linda, a trail angel who opens her yard to hikers, offering a free place to pitch our tents. Her generosity extends to providing sodas, creating a sense of community as hikers gather on her porch to share stories and meals. It's these unexpected acts of kindness that make the hiking community so special.
As I drift off to sleep, the sound of rain on my tent and the distant thunder and lightning remind me of the adventure ahead. Tomorrow, New Hampshire awaits, and with it, a new set of challenges and experiences. The AT is a journey of discovery, where each day brings a unique blend of nature's wonders, local flavors, and the warmth of human connection.
