AJ Architecture Awards 2026: Unveiling the Shortlist (2026)

The 2026 AJ Architecture Awards Shortlist: A Celebration of Innovation and Community

The AJ Architecture Awards, a prestigious annual event, has unveiled its shortlist for the 2026 edition, showcasing the very best in British architecture. This year's selection highlights a diverse range of projects, from civic centers to cultural hubs, each demonstrating exceptional design and community engagement.

One of the standout projects in the Civic category is the York Minster Centre of Excellence by Tonkin Liu. This innovative structure seamlessly blends traditional stonemasonry with cutting-edge digital fabrication techniques. The judges will be intrigued by how this heritage-focused design meets modern needs, potentially setting a new standard for sustainable and culturally rich public spaces.

In the Community and Faith category, three projects stand out. Eagle House youth center in Hastings by IFDO, Tamar Valley Crematorium in Plymouth by Fatkin, and Vault Youth Zone in Preston by John Puttick Associates each bring a unique approach to community spaces. These projects demonstrate how architecture can foster social connections and serve diverse community needs.

The Cultural projects are divided into two categories, with 10 schemes shortlisted. The over £20 million category features notable entries like Theatr Clwyd by Haworth Tompkins, BEAM by Bennetts Associates, and V&A East Storehouse by Diller Scofidio + Renfro. These projects showcase the potential of architecture to create iconic, transformative spaces that enrich our cultural experiences.

The shortlist also includes smaller-scale cultural projects, such as Sheep Field Barn by DSDHA and ArtPlay Pavilion at Dulwich Picture Gallery by Carmody Groarke. These projects demonstrate that innovative design can be achieved at various scales, from grand public spaces to intimate cultural venues.

The judging panel, led by Open House founder Victoria Thornton and renowned architects like Eva Jiřičná and Russell Curtis, will have a challenging task. They will evaluate each project based on design excellence, client/community engagement, space utilization, and sustainability. The criteria emphasize the importance of architecture's role in enhancing our daily lives and shaping our communities.

The winners will be announced at a grand dinner at the Royal Lancaster London on November 26, 2026. This event promises to be a celebration of architectural excellence, inspiring future generations of designers and architects alike.

In my opinion, the 2026 AJ Architecture Awards shortlist showcases the incredible diversity and creativity within the British architectural scene. Each project on the list demonstrates a unique approach to design, community engagement, and sustainability. The awards serve as a powerful reminder of architecture's ability to transform our world, one building at a time.
